Diwali, the festival of lights is one of the big festivals celebrated in India. The festival is celebrated with vacations, visits, bursting crackers and lots of sweets and savories. The Sweets and Desserts served for the festival are quite heavily dependent on dairy. Like any major festival or holiday in any country, we all get obsessed with vegan-izing some family favorites. With very few Vegan Indian commercial options in India and almost none in the United states, I try to vegan-ize some of my favorites around the Indian festivals that people can make at home. This year I have a decent collection that I could make into an E-book.

The names of the sweets and flavors might be new to some, but they are delicious and addictive. I have tried to keep the sweets close to traditional wherever possible, that means a few do have similar oil content as you would find in a ghee laden sweet. A good number of the recipes though are low fat with no or little refined oil and some also use natural sugars like maple syrup. Gluten-free options are mentioned wherever possible.

Here is the Table of contents

It is difficult to explain each of these exactly. Loose translation to get an idea about each of the sweets.

Mysore pak – Chickpea flour fudge, and when i say fudge, it is indeed super fudgy fudge.

Nan Khatai – Semolina Cardamom Shortbread

Sooji halwa – Semolina crumble with nuts and cranberries
Amaranth Burfi – Amaranth Coconut fudge bars
Kaju Katli – Cashew fudge
Gulab Jamun – Doughnut type balls in flavored syrup
Gluten-free Gulab Jamun – Gluten-free version
Sandesh – Melt in your mouth cheesy balls
Kesar Sandesh – Cheesy balls flavored with saffron
Rasgulla – Cheese balls/dumplings/chewy matzo balls 🙂 in rose flavored syrup
Rasmalai – Cheese discs/dumplings in saffron cream
Wheat Laddoo – Wheat balls/truffles
Kesar Mawa Burfi – Saffron flavored Fudge
Besan Laddoo – Chickpea flour truffles
Coconut Burfi – Coconut fudge bars

Its a 4 way win. You win the recipes, ebook and the photographs, I win because I can use some of my hard work to raise funds. All of the money raised from the sale of the E-book will be donated to the animals suffering because of Cyclone Phailin (to VSPCA through Help Animals India which his a 501 c3 chairty) and to Pigs Peace Sanctuary. The animals win as we all make plant-based sweets this Diwali and also because they get the funds from the sale of this book.

A lot of hard work has gone into the recipes, photography as well as making of the E-book. So please do not share the recipes or photographs publicly without permission.

I ask for $5 for the E-book. You can pay any amount greater than that. 100% of your donation will be collectively donated to the charities mentioned. I will not keep any.

Save a baby, Skip the dairy!
Have a wonderful and prosperous Deepawali.

Congrats on your e-book!! You should probably publish a cookbook soon. I tried your gulab jamun sometime ago and it tasted really good. I am going to use your recipe and slightly modify it to make kala jamuns. I am really tempted to buy your e-book but I am going to wait for a little longer as I am trying my version of rasmalai. Let’s see how it turns out.

Happy Deepawali 🙂 I can’t wait to see you soon! What an awesome eBook Richa! The vegan Indian Diwali sweets look so yummy, I would love to try any of them as long as it has coconut, caramel, or cheesy based. I’m not a huge fan of all fudge or chocolate desserts, but the cheese dumplings sound enticing to try!
